if you had a choice being from California would you move to Denver or Austin?
I am looking for outdoor activities such as tennis, art, fresh air, easier traffic, good public schools for kids, and moderately priced real estate.. I am stuck on these two cities since wife can’t tolerate running from hurricanes in FL..(although I could)..the only difference I can see is Denver has more comfortable weather but there is not much around it for a 2 hour drive as opposed to Austin, close to Houston and Dallas…
I’ve lived near both these cities. They share some attributes, but are very different in other ways. Austin is very mild much of the year, but can get REALLY hot in the summer. The University of Texas is still a huge influence on the city, and Austin benefits from the cultural opportunities it provides. Austin is far more crowded, however, and is in a far more conservative area politically, although the city itself is comparatively liberal in its thinking.
Denver is VERY cold in the winter, but if you’re prepared for it, it’s not a big deal. It has sun about 300 days out of the year; you can go outside in a fleece jacket and a pair of short in zero-degree weather as long as the wind isn’t blowing, and you’ll see tons of people on the ski slopes in short in the spring! It is of course close to great skiing, whitewater rafting, and the Rockies as a whole. People who have never been to Dever assume it’s IN the Rockies, which is not correct; it’s a few miles east of the foothills, out on the prairie. It’s a quick trip to the mountains, however, and well worth the drive.
In general, Colorado is a far more relaxed place than Texas; Texas is still somewhat caught up in the “old south” way of thinking, and in some respects Austin is still trying to “prove” that it’s as good as anywhere else. Colorado has the virtue of not really CARING what anybody else thinks 
It lends itself more to outdoor activities; Austin is very much about social activities, bars, restaurants, clubs, etc. Colorado is still part of the “wild west” in a very real sense (especially once you get up in to the small mountain towns); it may not have as much to do right at hand, but what it does have really can’t be found many other places at all. One down side to Austin is that it has grown enormously in the past few decades, and traffic is abominable – worse than L.A., in my opinion – because it took Austin so long to realize they had to do SOMETHING about it.
Colorado beats Texas hands-down as far as pollution and clean water. Colorado is VERY picky about keeping those things clean. Denver had major problems as recently as the early 70s because of all the coal-burning heat; since then, they’ve done a huge turn-around, and are quite strict about what and when you can burn. Most people don’t know that Colorado turned down the Olympic Games in 1976 because of fears of what it would do to the environment; it’s one of the few places I’ve ever been where people are willing to put their money where their mouth is in terms of the environment.
I moved to Colorado from Texas when my son was 17, so he was already pretty much grown; if I had to raise children again and had to choose between the two, I believe that I would go for Colorado, simply because I believe that children need the outdoors far more than they need the traditional structures of “society.” However, that’s my own personal take on the two places; your needs may be very different. Either way you go, they’re both good places to live (my grandmother lived in Austin, so I was there a LOT as a child and young adult). I think you’ll enjoy either city, so long as you go in with your eyes open.
